Is it worth visiting and staying in Tivat, Montenegro?

This article summarizes basic information about weather, sights, hotels, restaurants, beaches, car rentals, and properties in Tivat Montenegro. We provide a detailed explanation of why Tivat is worth visiting.

Tivat

On the picturesque shore of Kotor Bay is located one of the most beautiful Montenegrin cities – Tivat. From the numerous Tivat webcams, you can hardly recognize the location of this town because of the white yachts resting in the marine and the white houses with red roofs. Tivat is a perfect mixture of modern luxurious promenades, sand beaches, and historic places in the Mediterranean Sea. Even though Tivat is not the capital, it has its own airport and many hotels and apartments welcoming tourists throughout the whole year. After the first visit, you definitely want to come again. Let’s find out more about this wonderful place.

Where is Tivat?

Tivat is located in the western part of Montenegro on the coast of Kotor Bay. The location determines a warm spring and hot, short summer and a partly cloudy , long, wet winter. It is the center of the smallest municipality in Montenegro – Tivat Municipality. The population of the town was only 9.367 people in 2011, which is located at 46 km2. Podgorica (the capital of Montenegro) is located at 46 km, while Budva (the most famous tourist city in Montenegro) is 24 km. You can reach the town by car, plane, bus or boat. Even though Croatia is located on the other side of Kotor Bay and has its own Porto Montenegro, there are no direct ferries from the nearest country but summer. The plane is the most convenient way to reach the city, as there are many charter flights in summer and some regular flights to Belgrade and Istanbul throughout the year. The flight operators for regular departures are Air Montenegro, Turkish Airlines, and Air Serbia.

Why do you need to spend your vacation in Tivat? Advantages and Disadvantages

Each tourist is searching for a non-forgetful and unique experience on vacation; Tivat is glad it has many advantages that can please the most demanding tourists. We list the top eight reasons why you need to visit Tivat, but we are sure that you may find much more.

  • Porto Montenegro. In the town center is located the port for all sizes of yachts (from 12 m to 250 m) and boats. From here, you can start a day trip to the majestic mountains around Kotor Bay, go snorkeling in the Blue Cave, visit a fortified island with a lot of rabbits, or explore picturesque villages on the Bay shore. It is also a nice promenade to walk as it is one of the most luxurious and big marines in Europe. This complex includes the best hotels, sports complexes, conference centers, museums, shops, bars, and restaurants.
  • Historical sights. Tivat has heritage from several epochs – Turkish, Austrian reign, Serbian, Byzantium and Illyrian. They left old architecture and monuments around the town. Among the top visited historical places are the Cultural Center in the fortified Boca Summer House (Bucha Palace), Bizanti Complex with old castle ruins, and Residence Pima-Paskavali. You may walk around the town on foot or take a scooter to explore attractive sights.
  • Beaches. Tivat is pleased to propose a beach for every type of tourist and mood. You can choose a beach in the town or take a taxi or car to the nearest neighborhood. All of them are equipped with sun beds and showers and have bars or restaurants for the whole day spent. You may find sand or pebble beaches. A more detailed review of the top beaches will be presented in a separate part of this article.
  • Nearest to the airport. Direct or charter flights are one of the most convenient ways to reach Tivat from abroad. The distance from the airport is 6.2 km (6 min by car without traffic jams). You may take a taxi in Tivat, order a car at the airport from an international company, or organize a private Tivat airport transfer from your hotel. For budget tourists’ local buses are available. Also, you may walk; the trip will take 42 minutes to the town center.
  • Tasty cuisine and seafood. Montenegro, like any other Balkan country, has a lot of tasty meat dishes that are worth trying. Additionally, the sea adds a variety of seafood in the restaurants. The top food to try is Njegusi Prosciutto (Montenegrin type of pig smoked thin slices, Cevapi (type of kebab), Black risotto with cuttlefish ink, day catch squids, crabs, and mussels. For tourists who do not eat meat, you may find special dishes like Kacamak based on porridge and sour milk.
  • Possibility to visit numerous sights around. Thanks to the location, you can explore the nearest sights within one day. Tivat is connected via a tunnel to Kotor, where you can visit one of the Old City, or you can take a boat to Herceg Novi, located on the border with Croatia. In Kotor Bay, several islands are located worth visiting – the Island of Flowers with the Monastery of St. Archangel Mikhail, the island of St. Mark, and the island of Gospa od Milosti with its women's monastery. And these are not all!
  • Many opportunities for leisure time. Whether you prefer snorkeling, shopping, hiking, sightseeing, nightclubs, museums, or lazy time on the beach, all these are available in Tivat. You do not need to search long, the town is small, and all tourist attractions and meeting points are located within walking distance. The prices for all activities are significantly lower than in the nearest European countries.
  • Picturesque sea and mountains. Kotor Bay is called the south fiord. You can explore it from the sea or the highest peak, Sveti Ilija, of the Vrmac mountains located in Tivat. The mountains are eight km long and five km wide. The highest point is 785 m in height. There are several popular hiking walks with different durations for experienced or beginners.

Even though we mentioned quite a lot of reasons to come, you should understand there are some disadvantages of Tivat. Unfortunately, Tivat is also popular for:

  • Traffic jams from the Tivat airport. There is only one road from the airport to the town, which causes huge jams in the peak season. There are no special lines for bases, and you need to go 150 m from the airport to the nearest bus stop with your luggage close to the highly loaded highway.
  • Concrete promenade. The Tivat promenade is relatively new, so there are not so many plants and trees to walk in the shadow. It lasts from Tourist Buro Donja Lastva (typical coastal village house) to the Naval Museum for almost 2 km. You will pass bars, beaches, restaurants, and some churches. For sure, there are some Mediterranean plants, flowers, and trees, including the Carob tree planted in 1886.
  • Limited sights in the Tivat. Even though Tivat has a huge history, there is not so much left to see for our generation. But still, a variety of hiking trips and boat trips can widen your vacation experience.
  • Expensive. The luxurious Tivat Porto Montenegro determines the visitors of the city. As there are no massive points of attraction and exclusive natural sights, Tivat is mainly interested so far by marine visitors with high income. Compared to Budva or Bar, Tivat has less choice of budget hotels and restaurants.

If some Tivat disadvantages do not disappoint you, we are going further to explore more reasons to come to Tivat.

Sightseeing in Tivat

In this part, we will focus on the worth of visiting the Tivat attraction, how to get there, and at what time.

  • Porto Montenegro. It is a huge complex of hotels, marine, sports clubs, residents, 70 international fashion boutiques and restaurants, Captain’s Park, and many more. You can not only walk around but also visit many events, such as fashion shows, galleries of paintings, or live concerts. Normally, events occur from June to October. The Yacht Club organizes regular sporting events (sailing, motor yachting, and rowing) – regattas, while in Buddha-Beach Bar, you may enjoy Asian cuisine near the infinity pool. Porto is available and interesting during the whole day and night. The best way to come here is by taxi or car on foot.
  • City Promenade. The 2-km promenade is the main walking avenue of the town and the main attraction center after Porto Montenegro in Tivat. On one side, there is a pleasant view of the sea with boats; on the other side, there are colorful, renovated old houses with bars, restaurants, and hotels. You can take photos near the famous sailboat Jadran or one of the palms. The promenade is comfortable for strollers and people with special needs, as the pavement is made from concrete on one level without steps. You can reach the promenade by foot from any part of the town or by taxi/car. The best time for visiting is in the afternoon after the day heat and at night when all shops and bars are open and welcoming for refreshing.
  • Churches. Among historical places, there are many Catholic and Orthodox churches. Some of them are located on the islands (Lady of Mercy – bishops’ residence), some on the hills (Sveti Luka in the Gosici village), in the nearest villages (Sveti Srdj, Nikola, and Dimitrije) or the Tivat (Sveti Antun. Sveti Rok, Sveti Sava). Some churches were constructed many centuries ago (like Lady of Angels in the year 1585), but some are relatively new (like Sveti Sava in the year 1967). If you want to visit a large portion of them, you’d better rent a car or organize a private tour with the transfer; you also need to rent a boat.
  • Big City Park. In the town center near Pine City Promenade behind Porto Montenegro is located the Big City Park (also known as Navy Park). According to the records, its area is 4 ha. This recreation area is small but cozy; do not expect a long walk there and a variety of spices as in popular botanic gardens. It is recommended to visit the park during midday to rest in the shadow of pine trees and Mediterranean plants. You can also see magnolias in blossoms, arises, and palms. Most of the trees have nameplates with short information about the distribution and scientific names. Unfortunately, there is no WC there.
  • Naval Museum. This museum is one of the most popular and famous in Tivat. It is located at the north end of the Pine City Promenade and a short distance from the pier. You can observe ships, photographs, a bathyscaph, and other artifacts of Montenegro Naval History. Near the entrance of the museum, you may see two authentic Yugoslav submarines; one of them, Heroj P-821, is open to visitors. The museum is open only on working days from 09.00 to 16.00. The ticket for the submarine and museum is 7 EUR.
  • Renaissance Summer House Buca. This complex of houses in Renaissance and Gothic style is located in the heart of Tivat. It was built in the middle of the 16 century and consists of five facilities – a church, residential building, chapel, porch, and economic house. The Kotor noble family owned it – Buca. This castle is renovated and welcomes tourists as an art gallery with a summer stage and museum of Tivat history. The gallery and museum are open during the daytime and at night for scheduled events.

As you see, there are enough sights to visit during a one-week vacation. Do not forget about boat trips to the Kotor and Blue Cave.

How to reach Tivat?

Tivat is located on the seashore, near the highways and the airport. So, you can choose a plane, boat, car, or bus to come to Tivat. The fastest way to get there is by plane, but only in April the ticket price is relatively cheap. Tivat airport is an old one, and in winter time, you can fly to Tivat from there only to Istanbul (Turkey) by Turkish Airlines and Air Montenegro or Belgrade (Serbia) by Air Serbia and Air Montenegro. In the summertime, many charters offer direct flights to Tivat, including low-cost EasyJet and Jet2. You can purchase tickets on the official websites of airlines or numerous aggregators.

Unfortunately, there are no railway stations in Tivat. By train, you can come only from Belgrade in Podgorica or in Bar from where you can come by bus. On the way from Belgrade, you will cross the highest railway bridge in Europe – Mala Rijeka viaduct – located 20 km north of Podgorica. Popular European bus operator Flixbus offers 22 bus connections, including Zagreb and Split, Vienna, Munich, Dubrovnik, and Sarajevo from and to the Central Bus Station. Other operators are Blue Line, Autoprevoz, R-line, and others. You can travel around Montenegro by bus; there are also domestic buses to Budva, Bar, Podgorica, Herceg Hovi, and Kotor.

Even though there is Porto Montenegro, you can’t reach Tivat by ferries or cruise ships. The only international ferry travels from Italian cities Bari and Anconia to Bar to Kotor, and cruise ships stop in Kotor as well. There is a local ferry from Kamenari (near Herceg Novi) to Lepetane (near Tivat) – for passengers, the ferry is free; for others, you need to pay. So, if you choose sea transport, you need to take a car, bus, or taxi to arrive in Tivat. But if you are not short of money, you can rent a yacht or boat, and also some one-day boat trips starting from Kotor and finishing in Tivat.

Beaches in Tivat

Tivat Municipality has dozens of beautiful beaches; each one is unique and provides a remarkable experience. We will describe the ones that we can recommend by ourselves. Some Tivat beaches have sand and some pebbles, but the water everywhere is crystal clear. You can find public, free, or private beaches.

  • Waikiki beach. This beach is considered the best in the town of Tivat. Its white pebbles and sand from one side, concrete slabs with steps, and sky-blue water attract all tourists walking on City Promenade. It is now part of the beach club so that you can find showers, toilets, sunbeds with soft mattresses, a playground, and numerous bars and restaurants nearby. Waikiki Beach in Tivat is located 250 m from Porto Montenegro. If you like this area much, you may stay at Waikiki Beach Resort. You can rent a catamaran, boat, or yacht here.
  • Palma Beach. In front of the Palma Hotel, there is a small, cozy, private beach. When the hotel is not full, you can rest on this pebble beach with a bar. You can find a relaxing atmosphere here under palm trees, showers, toilets, and sunbeds with umbrellas- all in front of the city promenade.
  • Ponta Beach (Ponta Seljanovo). You can reach this pebble beach on foot from any part of the town; there is no parking lot nearby. It is public with the possibility to rent all equipment for convenient rest. As it is located near Porto Montenegro and is not large – 250 m long- it is extremely popular during the hot season. In summer, because of a lot of people, sanitary conditions are quite poor. The remarkable feature of this beach is the old lighthouse.
  • Belane Beach. At the end of the promenade, you may find this pebble beach for a quick refreshment or swimming for the whole day. It has a public part, and a part with sunbeds is preferable because of the large pebbles. From this beach, you have a nice view of the Island of Flowers and St. Michael Monastery. It offers a variety of water sports activities.
  • Donja Lastva Beach. Near the Tourist center at the beginning of the City Promenade is located another public beach – Donja Lastva (in the corresponding town area). This beach is partly sand and partly concrete, with a comfortable entrance to the water. It is also recommended for kids, but it is narrow and does not have so many sunbeds. There is parking nearby, and you also may rent a boat here.
  • Opatovo Beach (Opatovo-Lepetane). If you are traveling from Hercig Nova, there is a nice opportunity to have a small stop at this sand beach with small pebbles. It is located 5 km from Tivat. 200 m beach is divided into two parts by a ferry lighthouse. It is equipped with all the necessary furniture for rent, but you can also come here only with a towel.
  • Kukoljina Beach. This beach is located on the way from the town center to the airport. It has a mixture of small pebbles and sand. You can stay on the public beach with your equipment or rent a sunbed in a private section. Near the beach is parking or you may come by boat.
  • Plavi Horizontal Beach. It is the best sand beach in Tivat Riviera, located in a lush cove. This children-friendly beach with sunbeds and umbrellas is located 15 km from the Tivat center. In the middle of the day, you may rest in the pine tree's shadow. It is rewarded with a “Blue Flag” for high sanitary standards and water quality.
  • Ramla Beach (Velja Spila beach). On the other side of Lustica Bay, where Plavi Horizontal Beach is located, you may find another quietly positioned Ramla Beach. Coastal mountains surround this beach and have golden pebbles.
  • Zanjice beach (Lustica Bay). The Lustica Bay is located at the best pebble beach in Tivat – Zanjice. This beach has shallow water and is protected from strong western winds by the hill. There are no big villages there, but this beach is a popular stop for one-day boat excursions from Kotor. From the beach, you can see Marmula and Arza Fortresses, and in 5 minutes by boat, there is a Blue Cave. The best way to come here is by boat or by car from Tivat (27 km). There are sunbeds and a bar for a long day experience.
  • Oblatno Beach (Lustica bay). This 100-meter beach is located in the Bay; it is protected from waves and strong winds. It has a private area called Almara Beach Club, where you can rent a sun bed and an umbrella. From the pier, you can take sports equipment or a boat. You can also reach this beach by car or taxi. The best time to visit is during the sunset; the view here is marvelous.
  • Krasici Beach. This beach is located on the opposite side of Kotor Bay and has a picturesque view of Tivat town. You can come here by boat, by car or taxi (16 km). The beach is narrow and covered with pebbles of all sizes, but you can stay on concrete pavement. The water entrance has many rocks, but the water here is calm and clean. The place is not crowded and is recommended for a peaceful time.
  • Mirista Beach (Lustica Bay). This pebble beach is located close to Zanjice. There is not so much space to rest, only 10 m long, and most of the space is occupied by the concrete construction of a restaurant. You may take a sunbed and umbrella. It is one of the best beaches on Kotor Bay.
  • Solila Beach. This pebble beach is located close to the Tivat airport, 7 km from Tivat. Solila has all the facilities for comfortable sunbathing, including sunbeds and a restaurant. Because of the location, in peak season, it gets busy very often, so you’d better arrive earlier to find a good bed with a picturesque view of Tivat.
  • Kalardovo Beach. This beach is the closest to the Tivat airport, 5 km from the town center. You can wait for your flight on this sand beach with small pebbles. The entrance is shallow, and the water is warm and comfortable for families with kids. The entrance is paid, but you may use showers and toilets. On the one side is located a bar and a restaurant with middle-priced food and beverages. The parking is big but also paid.
  • Zupa Beach. You may find this beach at the entrance of the city on the south side, just after the airport. It is located near the ruins of the Bizanti complex and a park with cypresses. The length of this beach with small pebbles is only 70 m, but it has all the infrastructure – lifeguard, sun loungers with umbrellas, water tides, changing cabins, toilets, showers, playground, and water sport rental service.

There are many other town pebble beaches – Bonici, Laguna, Stara Racica – that are similar to each other. All of them are public sections where you can stay without an admission fee. So, you can spend every day of your Tivat holidays on a different beach.

Where to eat in Tivat?

Tivat proposes cuisine from all over the world for hungry tourists, from local Mediterranean dishes to Asian food. We want to list the top five restaurants; you can definitely choose the one per your budget and taste.

  • Al Posto Giusto. For Italian food lovers, this Tivat restaurant is in the heart of Porto Montenegro. Its interiors are made from stone, but you may also eat on the waterfront terrace, where you have a direct view of the Tivat marina and Kotor Bay. The food selection is wide: pizza, pasta, risotto, focaccias, fish, and meat dishes. It works from early breakfast time till night. The place is pricey.
  • Theodorus Restaurant. This best restaurant in Tivat is located near Pine City Promenade and Summer Theatre; on the back, there is a large parking space. All guests send good reviews on service and food, especially cold roast beef, salad with octopus, risotto with three types of mushrooms, and kids menu. You may eat fish, meat, chicken, and desserts there. The prices are medium.
  • Big Ben. One more described restaurant is located on City Promenade near Waikiki Beach Resort. The prices are medium, the portions are large, and there is no large waiting time. We recommend trying tuna tartare, grilled octopus, one of the burgers, and risotto. There is also a wide choice of traditional dishes from local cuisine.
  • Gallardo. For fun with traditional steaks, this steak house will be a good place for fine dining. It is also located in Porto Montenegro. In addition to the beef (all parts are available), you may order burgers, fish, duck, soups, salads, or starters. You can come for excellent service during breakfast time as well. But the place is rather expensive.
  • Sidro. This budget restaurant is located on the seashore in Luka Kaliman Bay. The restaurant is popular among locals for its tasty food of traditional authentic Balkan dishes.
