Zabljak – Detailed Review

Zabljak (Crna Gora in Montenegrin) is a small town in Montenegro located near the mountains of Durmitor National Park; it is the only town in this beautiful Park, and that is why it can be the starting point for many adventures. Even though it is now a hometown for 1.723 people, it is very popular among tourists. The best time to visit the town for hiking is in the summer, in July and August, because of the mild temperatures, but if you are a fan of skiing, then you should come in February and March when the days are longer. The town is small, and all parts are easily accessible by foot, but visitors do not stay long and go to explore Durmitor National Park.

Where is Zabljak?

Crna Gora (Zabljak) is located in the center of the Durmitor mountain region in the north of Montenegro. Zabljak's altitude is 1.450 meters (4.7 feet) above sea level. The capital of Montenegro, Podgorica, is located 124 km from the town (about two hours of driving). The largest city in Zabljak is Niksic (population is 58.212 people), which is 74 km away by car. Zabljak is also close to Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia so that you can choose Belgrad or Sarajevo for your flights. Zabljak is the main town of Zabljak municipality, where the main Montenegro sights – Tara and Sinjavina canyons and Durmitor National Park- are located.

The main problem for tourists is the lack of public transportation to the town. The easiest way to achieve Zabljak Montenegro is by car, whether it will be a rented car, taxi, or hotel transfer. The main road to the town is P5, which connects from the south to Podgorica (the capital) and coastal cities and from the north to Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The town has its airport, but it is used only for general aviation; for international flights, you need to choose Podgorica or Tivat airports. The Podgorica airport welcomes more international flights and charters throughout the year. In these airports, you can rent a car from local and international companies (SIXT, Europcar, Hertz). You can also catch a bus from ten cities in Montenegro – Podgorica, Tivat, Niksic, Budva, Kotor, etc. The bus terminal is located near the city center, so be aware that no international bus companies are operating in the city, only local ones. If you prefer railroads, you can come to Podgorica by train via Serbia and then choose other convenient transportation. The distance from Tivat to Zabljak is 153 km (3 hours by car), Kotor to Zabljak is 164 km (2 hours 30 minutes), and Niksic to Zabljak is 74 km (1 hour 15 minutes).

Leisure time in Zabljak. Pros and cons.

Every tourist can argue the pros and cons of Zabljak and will be right. We want to propose our vision, but we would like to hear your opinion in the comments.

Pros:

  • Mountains around the town from Durmitor National Park.
  • Lakes were created many years ago in mountains with cold glacial water.
  • Many activities during the whole year for solo and group tourists, with or without.
  • Fresh, pure air as this town is the only one located in Durmitor National Park and there are no factories or harmful production facilities.
  • Pure sparkling water to drink and swim, but rather cold as it goes from glaciers.
  • The best location for a peaceful and calm vacation throughout the whole year.

Cons:

  • Far from the sea, which means you can’t stay in Zabljak to sunbathe near the sea coastal line, you should come here only for local adventures.
  • Not so many options for public transport to and inside the town.
  • A small town with a limited choice of shops and restaurants. For shopping, we recommend visiting Podgorica or Porto Montenegro in Tivat.
  • Lack of nighttime proposals as discos and clubs, only some in large hotels.
  • Not so many choices of accommodation, all should be booked in advance.

What to see in Zabljak?

There are no sights or museums in the town. All attractions in Zabljak are natural and located in Durmitor National Park. The visit to the Park should be paid: the admission fee for one person is 5 Euro and for a parking lot – 3 Euro. There is no entrance fee for kids under seven years old. The main road for visiting the Park is P5; there are some local roads, including some gravel. The most popular destination points in the Park and associated with Zabljak are:

  • Durmitor National Park. It was founded in 1952, the first with a small surface area. Now, it occupies about 79.000 acres of area in Montenegro. The Park is divided into three zones: 10% is a strictly protected zone with no access, while the rest is open to tourists. The Park itself is a home for numerous plant and animal species, including more than 30 endemics. You can meet here European Black Pine (some 400 years old and up to 50 meters high), Brown Bear, Grey Wolf, European Wild Cat, Golden Eagle, Capercaillier, and others. The area has some limestone mountains (the highest is 2.522 m Bobotov Kuk), cold freshwater rivers, glacial lakes, “mountain eyes”, ice caves, many high-altitude meadows used as summer pastures, and dense forests. There are many activities for solo and group tourists; you can organize the tour by yourself or use organized ones.
  • Zabljak Tara Canyon and Tara Bridge. Tara Canyon is the deepest canyon in Europe and is made by the beautiful blue Tara River. Part of this Canyon – Ljubisnja - is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site List. The international convention also protects this unique biosphere reservation. The total length of the Canyon is 82 km (51 miles). Tara Canyon has sandy beaches, rocky cliffs, waterfalls, steps, large caves, picturesque terraces, and many beautiful campsites. Most of the guided tours in this area include Tara Bridge. Tara Bridge is a concrete arched bridge connecting several municipalities in Montenegro. The total length is 365 meters with five arches. From its pedestrian part, you will see the best view of the Tara Canyon in Montengro. Also nearby is the zip lane above the Canyon, which is one of the longest in Europe.
  • Black Lake (Crno Jezero), Zminje Lake, and other Glacier lakes. In Durmitor National Park, there are 18 lakes; the most famous and largest is Black Lake. You need only 7 minutes by car to reach it or about 2 hours by walking (3 km). The Black Lake Montenegro consists of two smaller lakes – Big Lake and Small Lake. In summer the water level drops and you can walk between them, while in autumn when the level is high, there is one lake. There are several leisure activities on the lake: walking around the 3.5 km educational path to see small Celine Waterfall (the path has some stairs and rocks), have a picnic in a dedicated barbeque area, rent a rowboat (the price starts from 8 Euro per hour), swim (the highest water temperature is in summer and reaches 15 C), hiking (several trails starts from the Black Lake) or dine in the national restaurant located near the entrance to the lake. In three walking hours or twenty minutes by car, you can see another popular Glacier lake – Zminje Lake. It is located at an altitude of 1.520 m and is surrounded by evergreen forests. It is 7-8 deep, and the water here is cold, as is the case with other glacial lakes. It’s another perfect location for a day trip around the lake; the path is good-marked and easily accessible, even for kids. This place is more natural, with not so many tourists and public services such as restaurants or boat rentals available.
  • Bobotov Kuk. This peak is the highest in the Durmitor range (2.523 m) and Montenegro and one of the other 48 peaks in the Park. From this peak, you will see most of Durmitor Park, Albania on the right, and Bosnia on the left, which is why it is so popular for hiking. Two main tracks lead to the top; the shortest starts and ends in Sedlo Zabljak (10 km and 4-5 hours), while the longest starts and ends in Zabljak (24 km and 10 hours). As in winter, the peak is covered with snow, and hiking is allowed only in the summer season. The trial from Zabljak is more challenging and goes through difficult terrain. It starts from the Bobotov Kuk sign board and goes initially through the forest; when you reach the top of the trees, the gradual incline will start. The final stretch is rocky up to the saddle, where it connects with a short trail from Sedlo. You can also combine routes; it is better to start from Sedlo and end in Zabljak as it provides more stunning landscapes and green pastures. The return trail will be downhill, but even in this case, you need to be prepared, have enough water and food, and wear solid footwear. We recommend hiking to the Bobotov Kuk early in the morning to return before darkness.
  • Curevac Zabljak. It is the mountain peak 1.650 meters above sea level located in Durmitor mountains close to Zabljak and Black Lake. From the peak, you will have one of the greatest views of the deepest part of Tara Canyon and Durmitor massif. The most popular hiking route starts from Zabljak and then leads to Black Lake, and after an around-trip, it goes to the Curevac viewpoint. On your way, you will cross some hills in the forest and valleys using the natural path. The slope is gentle and not so crowded; you will enjoy the views and calmness of the area. If you start your trial directly from Zabljak, you need to search for the Curevac or Vidikovac signs.
  • Sedlo Pass. For non-experienced travelers, we recommend exploring Durmitor mountains from Sedlo Pass – the highest mountain in Montenegro. This serpentine is located near Zabljak, Piva Lake, and Bobotov Kuk. The road goes up to 1907 above sea level, from where you will see many alpine meadows and Durmitor mountains. On the highest point, you can stay for a break and continue further on foot in different directions (the shortest trail to Bobotov Kut starts here). Public transport is not allowed to Sedlo Pass, so you need to hire a car or a bike or come here by taxi. The best time to come here is June, with green forest and flowers in meadows around, or in the first months of autumn, with all colors of red, orange, and yellow. The whole distance of the road from Zabljak to Piva Canyon is 52 km (about 4 hours for a round trip). The road is narrow and has a lot of twists and turns, but it is of good quality; the recommended speed here is 30-40 km/h. Please do not forget to visit a gas station; it is not possible to go on the road.

Things to do time in Zabljak

Zabljak is definitely not the place for a lazy time; you have numerous options in Zabljak for what to do for active time spent for every taste. We checked all of them and suggest all Zabljak activities:

  • Skiing. The snow covers Zabljak's surroundings for 120 days, and you can visit several mountain resorts located nearby – Savin Kuk Zabljak, Kolasin, and Cmiljaca (all in Durmitor National Park). Zabljak is the primary Montenegro Ski Resort for ski and snowboard lovers. Savin Kuk Zabljak is the most popular resort, with 4.7 km of slopes (easy, intermediate, and difficult) and six lifts. It is located 5 km from Zabljak and has the highest altitude for skiing and snowboarding in Montenegro. The day ski pass in Zabljak for adults is 13 Euro, while the pass for children is 6 Euro. Zabljak ski center is the most affordable in Montenegro. The general season starts in the middle of December and lasts until early April. The largest mountain resort, Kolasin in Montenegro, with 45 km of slopes, is located 84 km from Zabljak.
  • Hiking. All trails in Durmitor National Park are rated according to the level of tourists – easy, medium, and difficult. Some trails include not only natural beauty but also some ruins. If you hike on Mill Creek Trail from the Zminje Lake to the Black Lake, you will see the ruins of the first mills in Montenegro. The two mills are still used. From all trails, spectacular views are available throughout the year. Bobotov Kuk Hiking trails are one of the best in the Park.
  • Climbing. There are also 48 separate peaks in Durmitor National Park, most of which are affordable for most hikers. However, it is strictly recommended to take a professional guide for the highest peaks. The peaks are rocky, with different slopes, so you should take the corresponding outfit.
  • Rafting. There are three canyons in Durmitor National Park – Draga, Susica, Komarnica, and Tara. The most popular rafting tour is a one-day route from Brstanovica to Scepan Polje, with 21 rapids and 18 kilometers long. In Tara Canyon, you may achieve speed up to 30 km h (18 mph) on a rapid of 5 class. Rafting tours are organized from May to the end of September. It may be dangerous to raft in spring because of fast melting snow from the mountains.
  • Swimming. Cool, sparking freshwater in Tara river and lakes perfectly refreshes after hiking or walking. There are many places on the Tara River where you can sunbathe. All rivers in the Durmitor Park are mountain rivers, so they are cold and fast. Be careful.
  • Mountain biking and cycling. The most beautiful landscapes are available from Durmitor Ring, where you can drive for 2-3 hours by car or for a couple of days on a bike. You will drive through authentic mountain villages and pastures. The Ring starts from Zabljak and goes through good-quality accommodation points and restaurants. The best time to drive here is from May to November when there is no snow. There are many other smaller MTB and cycling tours available from Zabljak – to Black Lake, Razvrsje Loop, Plateau Loop, and more – for expert, easy, and intermediate bikers.
  • Kayaking and Canoeing in Zabljak. Canoes and kayaks are an alternative to rafting. Most water rental services rent boats, or you can bring your own equipment. The rivers in Durmitor Park are fast, so it is better to take a guide.
  • Fishing. Tara and Drina rivers are good places for fishing, as they are the main habitat for rich fish fauna, for example, for Huchen and Danube Salmon. There are no limitations on fishing unless you are fishing not for sale. You can grill your trophy in BBQ areas in most of the hotels or ask to prepare it in a restaurant.
  • Horse riding. In Zabljak municipality, you can explore the wild beauty on horseback. There are several stables where you can take a horse for a tour. For experienced horse riders, you can rent a horse for galloping in the nearby meadows. The closest stables are SKK “Vihor” and “Montenegro horse riding.” All contacts are available on Google Maps.
  • Gathering mushrooms and berries. In autumn and summer, you can walk around the forests to collect mushrooms, herbs, and berries and enjoy the picturesque views at the same time. Before starting your trip, check the weather forecast, as Durmitor National Park is wild and does not have shelters to escape from thunderstorms. Moreover, the Park is large, so do not go far from the hotel in Zabljak or car. Other types of hunting are prohibited in the park.

After active trails and cycling you need to enjoy the food in the best restaurant and café in Zabljak.

Café and restaurants in Zabljak

Montenegro cuisine, like a melting pot, consists of dishes from Balkan countries, Turkey, Greece, Italy, and Europe. Now you can eat not only local food but also from all over the world. Zabljak does not have a choice of restaurants like Tivat, Kotor, or Budva. Nevertheless, it is a good place to try traditional food - homemade-style Montenegro bread, chicken broth, and boiled lamb. Most of the restaurants are located near the main road – Vuka Karadzica Street. Our recommendation is:

  • Soa. The opening restaurant on our list is the one located in Soa Hotel (one of the best hotels in Zabljak). It has a modern design and offers European dishes (including vegan and vegetarian) with a wide choice of favorite wines from Montenegro, Spain, Italy, France, and Croatia. The restaurant works from 13.00 till 23.00. You can also order burgers with French fries here. You should be prepared for good, friendly service, and normally, you will not wait long for your food. The pizza starts at 9 Euro, and the dessert is 5 Euro. From this restaurant at the end of Zabljak town, you will see the remarkable view of Black Lake.
  • Dvoriste. This restaurant is located in the town center and services European and Central European food. You can also find vegetarian dishes on the menu. The prices for lunch, brunch, and dinner are moderate in this place. The interior is made in a cozy traditional Montenegro style with stones and woods. The guests recommend the friendly staff as well as homemade apple pie, chocolate cake, salmon, tomato soup, chicken, and potatoes. We like this place because of the possibility of sitting inside or outside and having cold or hot drinks.
  • Izvor. Several kilometers from Zabljak on P5 road, you can stop and dine in this restaurant. It specializes in BBQ food – meat, fish, or vegetables. You can try veal cream soup or kachamak here (a local dish with cheese). The cozy design with wooden panels, tables, and seats makes the place perfect after long hiking on cool evenings. The price per person is 10-15 euros. The panoramic view of the mountains will keep you for a couple of hours of peaceful time. The staff here is very friendly and is glad to serve you a large dinner or hot tea with honey.
  • Oro. The travelers on TripAdvisor have chosen this restaurant several times (the last one in 2023). It is located in the town center of a small building with large windows that provide a perfect glance at Durmitor National Park. It serves tasty Eastern European food – ajvar, stuffed peppers, kacamak, risotto with vegetables, chocolate cake, and other traditional specialties. We especially like how the food is served – perfect for Instagram. The prices are medium. It works from 08 am till 01 am. In nice Zabljak weather, you have an option to sit outside.
  • Enigma. One more traditional restaurant is located in the hotel Enigma in Zabljak. Here you can taste different types of meat (beef, calf, veal, pork), breakfast of all types (scrambled eggs, sandwiches, pancakes), soups, cabbage rolls, stewed sauerkraut with meat, and many more. The portions are large, but the price is not low. You can come here to dine in or take away. As a restaurant in the hotel, it works from 8 am to 11 pm. This restaurant is located 20 minutes by foot or 3 minutes by car from the town center.
We described only several restaurants, the most visited, but there is much more to explore. We also suggest you visit Kacun in Zabljak, Lupo d argento in Zabljak and Koliba in Zabljak.

This option is the best for living remotely in an eco-style.

In addition to large complexes, there are several private villas and apartments for rent. Several ways for booking are available – on popular aggregators (Booking, Expedia. Travelocity, Agoda), direct booking on official websites (you can find them by the name on Google Maps), and booking from real estate agencies online or offline. For regular travelers, aggregators provide additional discounts or additional free services. We suggest searching for accommodation only on trusted websites and choosing options only with a significant number of true reviews (more than one hundred). If you are not sure about the prices or conditions, we offer our service at the best rates and only check the accommodation premises.

The booking conditions for different resources are not the same. Some hotels/apartments could be booked with free cancellation until the check-in date; for some, you have to pay for the first night; some reservations do not require any prepayment – the payment will be done at the property, but the best proposal with the lowest price normally is not refundable. If you want to make advanced payments and have some concerns, we recommend contacting the hotel directly to check if the booking website is not fake. Also, we know the cases in which you fulfill all booking requirements, but the reservation is canceled when you arrive. Be prepared that house owners and small apartment facilities do not speak English freely. There is another reason to choose a trustable and reliable service.

Property for sale in Zabljak, Montenegro

Even though the town is small, you can purchase the property here for your vacation or as an investment. You can check the available options for sale on internal and local websites – Indomio.me, realting.com, real-estate-in-montenegro.com, Tranio, and many more. In the town, you hardly can find an office of a large real estate company, only locals, as most of the agents are from Niksic and come to the town with potential clients. The demand for the property is not so high in this area; some objects can be presented for a couple of years, and you can expect some discount. The real estate market of Zabljak is growing every year, so it is a good investment.

The most popular objects are detached houses of different sizes. You can find large concrete two-three-store buildings or small wooden houses for summer leisure time. The location also varies from the town center to the piece of heaven surrounded by peaceful nature. There are not so many new houses, most of which are sold furnished with a family history. For example, a 60 m2 house with one bedrooms and a fireplace costs 90.000 Euro. You can find a renovated house with two bedrooms at this price, but it is more remote from the town center. The newly built house with four bedrooms and two bathrooms is more expensive – 200.000 Euro.

There is also the option of buying a plot of land to build your house. Foreigners can’t purchase agricultural lands and forests, and it should be less than 5.000 square meters (if you would like to purchase more, you need to open a company in Montenegro), but there are no legal requirements on the quantity of land and properties in this land. Before making a purchase, you need to study local urbanization plans and check its urban-technical conditions. Most of the land available in Zabljak has water and electricity and has a wonderful view of Durmitor National Park. The price for 45.000 m2 of land starts form 1.000.000 Euro.

Among apartments, the most popular options are in new complexes. The apartments in luxury homes may achieve the price of 150.000 Euro for one bedroom (70 m2) without furniture or 93.000 Euro for 35 m2. You can also find townhouses (multi-level apartments); for example, the new apartment constructed in 2024 with one bedroom and 45 m2 living area costs 119.000 Euro. The apartment with an owned fence and underground garage with direct access to residential areas is even more expensive – 168.000 Euro. Meanwhile, an apartment in an old building costs 90.000 Euro for 54 m2 (one bedroom).

If you have decided to buy a property in Montenegro, you should double-check the agent, the agency, and the object with a local lawyer properly registered in the country. You need to check all documents and permissions for building property, future plans for construction in this area, and whether the object is free of any debts. The contract should be signed in front of a licensed notary. Do not forget about mandatory fees – transfer, notary, tax, and agent fees (mostly depending on the property price, from 0.01% up to 5% each). All objects are assigned to the agents, so we recommend starting with agency research or contacting us.

Conclusion

We hope that you have found out many new facts about Zabljak and are considering it for your new vacation or long-term stay. It is the perfect place for calm and active leisure time all year around. US citizens do not need a visa to visit Montenegro if they plan to stay for up to 90 days. Your passport also should be valid for 90 days after your return date.

  3. Is it safe for three young ladies to travel in this part of Montenegro?

Absolutely. This European country values tourists, and the police ensure their safety. Whether you are a man or a woman, you will not receive any special attention from citizens. But watch your belongings in public places, as there are many pickpockets.

  4. What about Wi-Fi in Zabljak? Can I work remotely from this place?

Sure. The Wi-Fi connection in towns and cities in Montenegro is stable and fast. There is no problem with Wi-Fi in Zabljak hotels.

  5. Are there many shops in Zabljak?

Many shops in Zabljak are open every day except Sunday. VOLI and Idea are available in supermarkets. Unfortunately, there are no special stores, only groceries. The rest should be purchased in Niksic or Podgorica.
